Almost a year ago I fell in love with a peach wine my sister-in-law brought down from New York State, I wrote about it here. It was from the Adirondack Winery in Lake George, about 3 hours away, and they can't ship to NJ. We used to get up there once a year or so but stopped going, plus we used to drive past every year for almost 10 years but have given up vacationing that far up NY state.
This past weekend, we had plans to be in eastern Vermont, driving up on Thursday afternoon. Since we were going to be in the car for hours anyway and we were headed (sort-of) in the same the direction, The Husband and I agreed that we would swing an hour out of our way, each way, to the winery.
We picked the boys up from school and headed out. I had called to verify their hours and they offered to stay open a little late if we called from the thruway and were stuck in traffic. We made it in great time, arriving in Lake George, where almost every business, including McDonald's, was closed for the season. Other than pizzerias, the wine store was the only open business we saw in Lake George.
Since this was something I had been anticipating for almost a year, there was a fear that it wouldn't live up to my expectations. Not only did it live up to them, it exceeded it. It wasn't so much going to a store and buying stuff but was rather a wine experience.
We were the only customers during the 45 minutes that we were there. TH and I each tasted 7 different wines, he focusing on reds and I on fruit wines. There were a couple that weren't my style but I fell in love with 2 more, which makes my 4 favorite wines out of their shop.
I came up to buy the peach wine and some cranberry wine, I ended up getting some strawberry Riesling and a green apple that was fabulous. TH purchased a number of different reds, including a mulled spice one that even smelled good to me (again, not a fan of reds). I bought enough to last a year (and now we have to invest in a wine rack). We had cheese, we bought bbq dip and butter toffee. I had such a good time. I had even brought my camera but forgot to take some photos of the tasting room, which is a shame since I loved the way they displayed the wine on the wall.
It also ended up being much closer to our destination in Vermont than we thought. We took the boys to a burger joint, because after the tasting we figured it would be best if we ate something before continuing our drive.
My only complaint? That after further sampling of the wines on my own, I like the green apple one even better than the peach and I bought more peach than green apple. I'll have to find an excuse to drive up to one of the shops that carries the line and pick up a few more - especially before summer.
I also bought this trivet:
You don't have enough wine already?!

Sometimes, only too much is enough. When it comes to wine, that's what Mindy tells me.

Well, when you don't have the option of running to the corner wine store to get your favorite, there is no such thing as enough.
