I am not going to post the answer to the riddle. If you really need to know, e-mail me. The hint is that it is about your point of view. We need to understand other people's points of view, not just say we understand them, but truly see them. Day to day, our own view generally works just fine, but being able to really see things through other people's eyes is a valuable tool.
In the end, Zon and Hsu are beheaded and Sol goes around painting red dots on the foreheads of everyone he meets. That is not the purpose of philosophy.
Again, lets see the definition from wikipedia: "from the ancient Greek word "Φιλοσοφία" (philo-sophia), which means "love of wisdom". In a modern context, it is used to refer to debates concerning topics such as what exists, what knowledge is and whether it is possible, and how one should live. Philosophical literature is typically characterized by its use of reasoning in order to advance cogent arguments about these topics. Typically, these arguments involve consideration of competing views and their perceived inadequacies."
Philosophy is a discussion and debate about knowledge and life from the perspective of loving wisdom. It involves pointing out flaws, inadequacies and what can not be proven.
Everyone knows that our point of view is not the only valid one, but most of us are extremely uncomfortable with that, and even more so when we actually have to confront the point of view of others. (Lost fans: the survivors think they have the right to live on the island, but the view of those who were already live there is that the survivors are only being allowed to live there, within rules) Our own perspective can often cloud our ability to see and understand other views. We are attached to our own views and that can make it difficult to see past them.
Sometimes our assumptions and views can be completely wrong. We become blinded to the views of others. So we need to question our own perspective, to sort out what is from what we think is. That is philosophy, and it can be uncomfortable, but it can be necessary. Questions are good and answers are good, but sometimes not finding an answer can be better. As Sol discovered, his ability to answer the question depended on the inability of the others to answer it. Just because we all raise our hands does not mean we all have the correct answer.
